Heather and myself were sitting down having breakfast, we commented on what a great day it was going to be when suddenly we heard a rabbit squealing on the garden terrace which is not far from the kitchen window, I said to Heather a fox must have grabbed a rabbit then I bolted for the door to get a look at the fox. It had me stumped for awhile; no fox, I then looked around and saw what the squealing was all about, we had had a lot of trouble with blackbirds scratching the bark off the garden terraces onto the path and veranda below, so I had been trapping the birds with a square wire trap with spring loaded drop trap door on both ends. I would bait the hanging trigger inside the trap with a piece of bread or fruit which the blackbirds could not resist, with this method I have managed to trap 28 of these pests and they were relocated……., but for the last two months had caught nothing until the rabbit sprung the trap, why the rabbit went into the trap is anyone’s’ guess.

Being a hunter I seized on the opportunity to introduce my miniature fox terrier of 7 months to the affray, I tossed the dog up the bank she landed right beside the trap but facing away from the rabbit, although she was excited and knew something was on she looked for an answer. The rabbit then moved the dog spun around looking the rabbit in the eyes which were as big as dinner plates by this time with fright. The rabbit tried to jump in the cage and then next was unexpected, the dog let out six quick YOIKS with fright came down off the bank and passed me like a Bondi tram, she looked as if she had seen the devil himself, much laughter came from Heather and myself. After awhile the dog plucked up enough courage for another look at the rabbit then started to bark and bite the cage trying to grab the rabbit, to that little dog the world looked all right once again. I then picked up the fearless little dog and let the rabbit go he deserved his freedom as he

Supplied enough sport for one day.
